Nisyros Dialogues 2024, “Tourism, Hypertourism: Limits, Management and Ecotourism”

diaNEOsis in collaboration with Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.) published a new study on “Sustainable Tourism in Natura 2000 areas”, which analyzes the framework and conditions for a sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism development in Natura 2000 areas.

This new study approaches the issue as a whole and aspires to be a national strategic plan for the organization and development of tourism in the 446 recognized Natura 2000 areas in Greece.

It takes into account the important particularities of these protected areas and the institutional framework that governs them at an
environmental, spatial and touristic level.

In addition, it analyzes the characteristics of modern tourism and lists ten examples of development in respective regions in Greece
and abroad, concluding with specific policy directions.

The economic benefits resulting from the utilization of Natura 2000 areas were presented at the stage of the “Nisyros Dialogues 2024”, held for the third year on the island between July 4 and 7 by the “Georgios M. Michalos Foundation”, under the auspices of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Prof. NTUA and president of N.E.C.C.A., Maria P. Papadopoulou, participated in this year’s “Dialogues” in the discussion on
“Tourism, Hypertourism: Limits, Management and Ecotourism with the presentation of the study by N.E.C.C.A. and diaNEOsis: Strategic Plan for the Organization and Development of Tourism in the areas of the Natura 2000 network”.

Commenting on the results of the study, Mrs Papadopoulou referred to the rules that must be applied in order to protect the
specific areas, but also to increase their economic impact on the local communities.

The proposed legislative initiatives and the conclusions analysed from applied international practices pave the way for a sustainable future in the 446 Natura 2000 areas in our country.
